Why Goodwill?

Why Goodwill?

Goodwill of the Gulf Coast is a Leader in Recycling

  • For over 100 years, Goodwill has been helping Americans find new uses for their unwanted items.
  • In 1902, Rev. Edgar Helms put jobless immigrants to work repairing and cleaning donated items, keeping them being thrown in the trash. He then sold those items to pay for his workers’ training and wages.
  • Last year, rather than sending it to the landfills, local residents donated more than 25 million pounds of material to Goodwill of the Gulf Coast, which has allowed us to provide jobs and programs to more than 10,000 people in need.
  • In addition to the recycling and repurposing efforts at our donated goods locations, Goodwill also operates recycling programs including: Dell ReConnect, and Secured Document Destruction. Combined, these programs divert an additional million pounds of waste from our landfills.
  • In large part due to our donated goods program, Goodwill employs over 500 people along the Gulf Coast.
  • The new center provides a convenient place for local residents to recycle; it will also create jobs for as many as a dozen people with significant disabilities.
